Starting fluid is a volatile, highly flammable aerosol that is sprayed into the air intake to help an engine start in extreme cold or when the fuel system is having trouble providing ignition. The ether or other volatile compounds in the spray ignite easily even at very low temperatures, providing initial combustion to help turn the engine over. It is a temporary emergency aid and not intended for regular use.
